SJO Wows at Carpenter Center in Long Beach

The 67-member Symphonic Jazz Orchestra conducted by Mitch Glickman, thrilled the audience at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center on Sunday, September 29th.  As part of the Carpenter Center’s new Arts for Life Program, SJO brought its unique blend of jazz and classical music to Long Beach.

The concert included sing-a-longs and featured the world premiere performance of a new work by composer Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, titled “Love’s Beckoning” commissioned by the SJO.  The new piece featured soloists Miguel Atwood Ferguson on viola and Katisse Buckingham on flute, along with the Orchestra.  The concert also featured two young audience members coming on stage to conduct the orchestra for one of the songs. Additionally, we remembered our Co-Music Director George Duke who passed away in August, with a moving tribute by Mr. Glickman and a performance of George’s Brazilian flavored work, “Festival”.
